The Place of the Printer in the Textsmith's Workshop

There was a time when people confidently predicted that the printer was dying.
Around the early 2000s, it was easy to see why. Digital communication was faster, cheaper, and apparently limitless. A document could be emailed across the world in seconds. A book could be stored on a hard drive or downloaded onto a phone. Newspapers were moving online. Businesses were beginning to replace paper forms with electronic ones. The screen seemed destined to replace the page.
The printer, according to this story, was merely waiting for its final obituary.
And yet here we are.
More than two decades later, printing has not disappeared. New printers continue to appear. Printing software continues to be developed. Operating systems still have printing subsystems. Businesses still buy printers. Schools still print. Governments still issue paper documents. People still keep certificates in folders, drawers and metal boxes.
The death of printing was greatly exaggerated.
Perhaps the interesting question is not why has printing survived? but rather what does printing give us that digital information does not?
The technology era has always been with us
There is an expression we have heard repeatedly in Zimbabwe: “We are now in the technology era.”
It sounds impressive until you stop and ask what it actually means.
Were there times when we were not in a technology era?
Someone born in 1900 lived through electricity, radio, the automobile, aviation, cinema, the telephone, mass printing, refrigeration, antibiotics and eventually television. Someone born in 1950 encountered computers, satellites, integrated circuits, nuclear power, mobile phones and the Internet. Someone born after 2000 has grown up surrounded by technologies that would have seemed like science fiction to previous generations.
Technology did not suddenly arrive with the smartphone.
Perhaps what we really mean by “technology era” is the Information Age, the Computer Age, or the Internet Age. Those are useful descriptions of particular technological developments. But technology itself is much older.
This distinction matters because we sometimes mistake the arrival of a new technology for the disappearance of an old one.
The arrival of the automobile did not eliminate the bicycle.
The arrival of television did not eliminate radio.
The arrival of the Internet did not eliminate books.
And the arrival of digital documents did not eliminate paper.
We tend to see benefits before constraints
New technologies are particularly good at displaying their immediate advantages.
Digital documents are an excellent example.
A PDF can be copied instantly. It can be transmitted across continents. Thousands of pages can fit on a device that fits into your pocket. Search makes information almost immediately accessible. A document can be duplicated without degradation.
Compared with a printed document, the advantages seem overwhelming.
But technology adoption is never simply a contest between advantages.
There are also constraints.
A digital document depends upon hardware. It depends upon software. It depends upon storage. It depends upon compatible formats. It may depend upon electricity. It may depend upon authentication systems, passwords, accounts or network access. And sometimes it depends upon the continued existence of the company that created the software with which the document was produced.
Paper has remarkably modest requirements.
You need light.
You need the piece of paper.
You need your eyes.
That is an extraordinary amount of resilience packed into a technology we sometimes dismiss as obsolete.
The certificate that survived the computer
Consider something as ordinary as a certificate.
Suppose you received an important certificate in 2012. You put the original paper document somewhere safe. Twelve years later, the computer on which you stored the scanned copy develops a hardware failure.
The backup was supposed to save you.
Except that perhaps the backup was on the same disk.
Or the external drive failed.
Or the cloud account disappeared.
Or you forgot the password.
Or the file was stored in an obsolete format.
Or you simply cannot remember which directory contained it.
Meanwhile, the paper certificate from 2012 is still sitting in the drawer.
There is something almost comical about this.
We often describe paper as fragile and digital storage as durable. Yet in ordinary human circumstances, the opposite can sometimes be true.
A paper document can survive years of neglect remarkably well. A digital document can disappear because of a single failed component.
This is not an argument against digital backups. Quite the opposite. Good digital preservation is immensely powerful.
It is an argument against confusing digital with permanent.
Paper is not merely a storage medium
Printing persists because paper does something more than store information.
It gives information a physical presence.
A printed document can be handed from one person to another. It can be signed. It can be stamped. It can be placed in a file. It can be carried into a meeting. It can be displayed on a noticeboard. It can be marked with a pen. It can be put into a folder and retrieved years later.
More importantly, people understand its physical status intuitively.
A paper certificate feels like an object.
A file on a disk feels like information.
That distinction becomes particularly important when the document represents something that society has decided must be trusted.
Birth certificates, identity documents, academic certificates, deeds, contracts and official records are not merely collections of characters. They are evidence.
And evidence has historically benefited from physical form.
This is one reason paper remains important across much of Africa. The transition to digital systems is real and often rapid, but governments and institutions still issue and preserve many important documents in physical form.
The persistence of paper is therefore not simply a technological failure.
It is also a social decision about trust.
The strange resilience of the printed book
Consider the classroom.
A school can announce that it does not have enough textbooks.
Someone may respond:
“But the students can download the PDF.”
Technically, that may be true.
But a PDF on a student’s phone is not necessarily equivalent to a textbook.
The phone may have a dead battery. The student may not have enough storage. The file may be buried among hundreds of other files. The device may be shared. The screen may be too small for comfortable reading. Notifications may compete for attention. The file may disappear when the phone is reset.
A printed textbook simply sits on the desk.
It does not need a login.
It does not need an update.
It does not need a charger.
It does not suddenly become unavailable because a server is down.
There is an immediacy to paper that is difficult to quantify.
Perhaps this is why we continue to say things such as “I want a hard copy.”
We are not necessarily rejecting digital technology.
We are asking for something we can hold.
The printer belongs in the workshop
This brings us back to the Textsmith.
We spend a great deal of time in this workshop talking about plain text, Markdown, Unix tools, databases, Git, scripting, publishing systems and digital workflows.
It would be easy to conclude that the Textsmith’s workshop ends at the screen.
It does not.
The workshop has an output.
Sometimes that output is another file.
Sometimes it is a website.
Sometimes it is a PDF.
And sometimes it is paper.
That makes the printer a legitimate workshop tool.
Unix itself has never been particularly embarrassed about this.
The lpr command has been sending files to printers for decades. The pr utility prepares text for printing. CUPS provides a modern printing architecture for Unix-like systems.
These tools embody an important idea: information does not have to remain inside the computer.
A text-processing pipeline might begin with a raw data file, pass through grep, awk, sed and sort, become a carefully formatted document, and finally emerge from a printer as a physical artefact.
That is not a retreat from the Unix philosophy.
It is an extension of it.
The computer transforms information.
The printer gives that transformation physical form.
The physical copy can be the final stage of a pipeline
There is something satisfying about thinking of printing this way.
Imagine the Textsmith’s workshop as a forge.
Raw text enters.
We inspect it.
We clean it.
We transform it.
We analyse it.
We format it.
We publish it.
And sometimes, at the end of the pipeline, we print it.
The paper is not necessarily the original medium. It is the final representation.
This is exactly why printing remains relevant even in a world dominated by digital documents. Digital tools have become extraordinarily good at creating and manipulating information. But human beings still inhabit a physical world.
We read at desks.
We sign documents.
We annotate pages.
We put certificates into drawers.
We take books to places where there are no convenient screens.
We print documents for meetings.
We pin instructions to walls.
The physical world has not been deprecated.
And then came AI
There is another reason printing may remain important.
Trust.
The rise of AI has made us increasingly conscious of how easily digital information can be generated, modified and reproduced.
A digital document can be copied perfectly.
It can also be altered perfectly.
AI makes the distinction even more interesting. We can now generate text, images and other forms of content at a scale that makes the old assumption โ “if it is written down, someone must have deliberately written it” โ increasingly unreliable.
Paper does not solve this problem.
A printed fake is still a fake.
But physical documents remain part of the systems through which institutions establish authenticity. Stamps, signatures, seals, letterheads, embossed certificates and other physical markers continue to have social meaning.
The important point is not that paper is inherently more trustworthy than digital information.
It is that humans have built institutions around physical evidence for centuries.
Those institutions do not disappear merely because a new technology arrives.
The Textsmith should not worship either medium
There is a temptation in technology discussions to turn everything into a competition.
Paper versus digital.
Vim versus Emacs.
Linux versus Windows.
Markdown versus Word.
SQL versus spreadsheets.
Old versus new.
But the Textsmith’s philosophy should be more practical.
The question is not:
Which medium is superior?
The question is:
Which medium serves the purpose?
Digital storage is extraordinarily good at duplication, search, transmission, automation and transformation.
Paper is extraordinarily good at physical accessibility, independent reading, tangible evidence and long-term human-scale storage.
There is no contradiction in using both.
In fact, a good workflow might deliberately use both.
Keep the source in plain text.
Keep the history in Git.
Keep the generated document in a reproducible format.
Keep a digital backup.
And for something important, print a copy.
That is not redundancy for the sake of redundancy.
It is resilience.
Printing is not going away
The printer may no longer occupy the centre of computing that it once did.
Good.
It does not need to.
Tools do not have to dominate the workshop to be valuable.
The printer has quietly moved into a different role. It is no longer the obvious endpoint of every computer workflow. Instead, it is one endpoint among many.
That may actually be a healthier position.
We can create a document and publish it on the Web.
We can send it by email.
We can store it in Git.
We can put it into a database.
We can save it as a PDF.
And, when the occasion calls for it, we can print it.
The future therefore may not belong to paper or to screens.
It belongs to the ability to move between them.
And that is perhaps the deeper lesson for the Textsmith.
Our workshop is not defined by a particular medium. It is defined by our ability to transform information deliberately and reproducibly.
The printer is simply another tool at the bench.
And as long as human beings still need documents they can hold, sign, file, read, carry and preserve, there will probably be a printer somewhere nearby, quietly doing its job.
Some technologies disappear because we find something better.
Others survive because we discover that they were solving a problem we had not quite understood.
Printing looks very much like the second kind.
The printer, it seems, is not dead.
It is merely waiting for the next job.
